What is "karat" gold?

Karat (sometimes spelled carat) measures gold purity on a scale of 24. Pure gold is 24k. Lower karats are alloys mixed with metals like copper, silver, palladium or zinc for hardness and colour. The chart below shows the gold content for each common karat:

KaratPurityCommon use
24k99.9% goldBullion bars and coins, some Asian jewellery
22k91.67% goldIndian and Middle Eastern jewellery, sovereigns
18k75% goldPremium European jewellery and watches
14k58.33% goldMost US engagement rings and chains
10k41.67% goldLower-cost US jewellery and class rings

How the calculation works

Scrap melt value is a straightforward calculation, but you need three numbers: the current spot price of gold per troy ounce, the weight of the item, and the purity. The formula is:

melt value = spot price × purity × (weight in grams / 31.1035)

One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams (it is heavier than a standard avoirdupois ounce, which is 28.35 g). Divide your gram weight by 31.1035 to convert to troy ounces, multiply by spot, then multiply by purity. The calculator above does all this automatically and lets you optionally apply a dealer payout percentage.

Why your dealer pays less than melt

Refiners and pawn dealers profit on the spread between what they pay you and what they receive when the metal is refined and resold. Expect typical payouts of 70-90% of melt value depending on the size of the transaction, the karat, and how much competition there is in your local market. Higher karats and larger lots tend to get the best percentages because refining costs are roughly fixed per batch.

Always ask multiple dealers for a quote. The melt value is your floor for negotiation, not a price they are obligated to pay.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the scrap gold calculator?

The maths is exact. The accuracy depends entirely on the spot price you enter and the purity you have correctly identified. If your jewellery is unmarked or you suspect plating, a dealer will test it with acid or XRF before offering a price.

Where do I find the gold spot price?

The XAU/USD chart on this page shows live spot in US dollars per troy ounce. You can also see it on our main charts page. For local-currency pricing, the homepage has gold quoted in EUR, GBP, JPY and AUD.

Does the calculator handle stones and gems?

No. If your item has set stones, weigh only the gold portion (or estimate the stone weight and subtract). A jeweller will remove and return stones before scrap weighing, since gem value is separate from melt value.

What about white gold and rose gold?

The colour does not change the gold content — only the alloy mix does. 14k white gold and 14k yellow gold both contain 58.33% gold; the difference is in the other 41.67%. Calculate them the same way.

Is "gold-filled" or "gold-plated" worth scrapping?

Plated items contain only a thin layer of gold and are usually not worth refining individually. Gold-filled items contain more (typically 5% by weight) and may be worth aggregating, but most casual sellers will not get a good price on small quantities. Solid karat gold (marked 10k, 14k, 18k etc.) is what scrap dealers want.
