What the spot price actually is

The gold spot price is the price for one troy ounce of pure gold for immediate settlement — "on the spot" — on the global over-the-counter market. It is not set by an exchange. It emerges continuously from dealing between bullion banks, refiners, miners and funds, mostly booked through London, which is why quotes from different data providers sit a few cents apart rather than matching to the penny.

Per ounce, per gram, per kilo

One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price per gram is the spot price divided by 31.1035, and the price per kilo is the spot price multiplied by 32.1507. At a spot price of $2,400/oz that is roughly $77.16 per gram and $77,162 per kilogram. The unit converter does this at the live price for troy ounces, grams, kilos, tolas, taels and pennyweights.

Why you cannot buy at spot

Spot is a wholesale benchmark for unallocated metal in 400-ounce London Good Delivery bars. Retail coins and small bars carry a fabrication and distribution premium above it — typically 3–6% for a one-ounce sovereign-mint coin, more for fractional sizes — and dealers buy back at or slightly below spot. That spread, not the spot price itself, is what determines whether a purchase makes sense.

How the Gold Spot Price Is Set

The London market

Roughly three-quarters of global wholesale gold turnover clears through London's OTC market, where members of the LBMA deal in unallocated ounces held on account. There is no central order book, so the "spot price" any data provider shows is an aggregate of executable quotes from a set of contributing dealers at that instant.

The LBMA Gold Price benchmark

Twice each London business day, at 10:30am and 3:00pm London time, an electronic auction sets the LBMA Gold Price — the benchmark used to value ETFs, settle contracts and price refinery deals. It is a fix at a moment in time, not a live quote. The number moving on this page is the continuous spot price; the benchmark is a snapshot of it.

Futures versus spot

COMEX gold futures usually trade a few dollars above spot. That gap is the cost of carry — storage and financing from now until the delivery month — not a disagreement about what gold is worth. When futures volume dominates a session, as it often does in New York hours, the futures price effectively leads and spot follows within seconds.

What moves it day to day

Gold's most reliable short-horizon driver is the real interest rate — the nominal yield on Treasuries minus expected inflation. Gold pays no coupon, so when real yields fall, the opportunity cost of holding it falls with them. The dollar matters for the same reason viewed from the other side: a stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for everyone else. See gold and inflation for the mechanism in full.

When it does not move at all

Spot gold trades from roughly 6pm US Eastern on Sunday to 5pm Eastern on Friday. Between Friday's close and Sunday's open there is no price, and any "live" quote you see at the weekend is Friday's last print. The trading day also rolls at 5pm Eastern rather than midnight, so a daily candle opens the previous evening.

Purity and what "pure" means

The spot price is for fine gold — 24 karat, 999.9 parts per thousand. Anything less is valued pro rata: 22k is 91.67% of spot by weight, 18k is 75%, 14k is 58.3%. The scrap gold calculator applies those factors to jewellery at the live spot price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold spot price right now?

The live figure is in the quote panel at the top of this page, in US dollars per troy ounce, alongside today's open, high, low and net change. It updates continuously while the market is open — from roughly 6pm Sunday to 5pm Friday, US Eastern time.

Is the spot price per ounce or per gram?

Per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams — heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 grams. To get the price per gram, divide the spot price by 31.1035; to get the price per kilo, multiply by 32.1507.

Why is the dealer price higher than the spot price?

Spot is a wholesale benchmark for large unallocated bars. Retail coins and small bars include refining, minting, distribution and dealer margin on top — commonly 3–6% over spot for a one-ounce coin from a major mint, and proportionally more on fractional sizes. Dealers buy back at or just below spot, and that round-trip spread is the real cost of owning physical metal.

Why do different websites show slightly different spot prices?

Because spot gold has no single exchange. Each provider aggregates quotes from its own set of contributing dealers, so prices differ by a few cents and timestamps differ by a second or two. The chart on this page uses OANDA's XAU/USD feed through an official TradingView widget.

What is the difference between the spot price and the LBMA Gold Price?

The spot price is continuous and live. The LBMA Gold Price is a benchmark set by electronic auction twice a London business day, at 10:30am and 3:00pm London time, and is used to value ETFs and settle contracts. One is a running quote, the other a daily reference point.
