How to read today's numbers
The quote panel at the top of this page shows the gold price today as it stands right now, together with the session open, the high and low printed so far, and the change against yesterday's close in both dollars and percent. Because spot gold rolls over at 5pm New York time rather than midnight, “today” on a gold chart starts the previous evening.
Why gold moves during the day
Most of gold's daily range is set by the US dollar and real yields. A hot inflation print or a hawkish Federal Reserve comment lifts yields and usually knocks gold down within seconds; the reverse lifts it. Physical demand and central-bank buying matter enormously over years, but rarely explain a single day's move.
Today's price versus your gold
The spot price is quoted per troy ounce of pure gold. Jewellery, coins and bars are worth a fraction of that depending on purity and any premium. The scrap gold calculator and the coin melt value calculator convert today's price into a figure for what you actually hold.
The Gold Trading Day, Session by Session
Asian session
Roughly 6pm to 3am US Eastern. Volumes are the thinnest of the day and ranges are usually narrow, but Shanghai and Indian physical demand can set a floor, and thin books make gaps around weekend news more violent.
London session
Roughly 3am to 11am Eastern. London is the centre of the physical bullion market, and the 10:30am and 3pm London benchmark auctions often mark the day's turning points. This is where most of the daily range is typically established.
New York session
Roughly 8am to 5pm Eastern. US data lands at 8:30am and the Fed at 2pm, so this window produces the sharpest moves. The gold 1 minute chart is the right timeframe for watching those releases as they hit.
More Live Gold Charts
Streaming and historical
The 24-hour live gold price chart streams the spot price tick by tick and adds gold's full price history back to the 1970s, so you can see where today's price sits against every previous bull and bear market.
The symbol itself
The XAU/USD chart page explains what the symbol means, how spot differs from futures, and why brokers quote gold a few cents apart. The gold spot price page gives today's price per troy ounce, gram and kilo, and the gold TradingView chart opens the full advanced chart with the complete indicator library.
Silver today
Silver usually exaggerates gold's daily move in both directions. The live XAG/USD silver price chart shows today's silver price alongside the gold/silver ratio.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price today?
The live quote at the top of this page shows the current gold price today in US dollars per troy ounce (XAU/USD), with the session open, high, low and the change against yesterday's close. It updates continuously while the market is open.
When does the gold trading day start and end?
Spot gold rolls over at 5pm New York time, so a gold trading day runs from 5pm Eastern to 5pm Eastern the next day. That is why the daily candle's open sits in the previous evening rather than at midnight.
Why is the gold price different on other websites?
Spot gold has no single exchange. Each data provider aggregates quotes from a different set of bullion banks and applies its own spread, so prices differ by a few cents. Dealer websites also quote a retail price that includes a premium over spot.
Does the gold price update at the weekend?
No. Spot gold stops trading around 5pm Eastern on Friday and reopens Sunday evening, so the price you see over the weekend is Friday's close. The chart resumes updating as soon as the Asian session opens.
What is the gold price today per gram?
Divide the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035 to get the price per gram of pure gold. The unit converter does this automatically at the live price for grams, kilos, tolas, taels and pennyweights.
